Farmers' blockades 'will cost supermarkets tens of millions'

Two days of blockades of distribution centres by farmers’ protest groups will cost supermarkets tens of millions, food retailers’ group CBL has warned. Convoys of tractors blocked delivery lorries from leaving depots at dozens of facilities up and down the country on Monday and Tuesday, in protest at government plans to cut the agriculture sector. The CBL said much of the fresh produce which was due to be delivered at the start of the week would have to be thrown... More >

Man who crashed into lamp-post 'was shot'

Police believe a man who died when his car crashed into a lamp-post may have been shot just before the collision. Officers were called to reports of an accident on the Parallelweg in Hengelo, Overijssel, on Tuesday evening, but started a criminal inquiry after finding blood in the car and a hole in the windscreen. ‘The trail of evidence gave us a different picture,’ police spokeswoman Chantal Westerhoff told local newspaper Tubantia. ‘We are fairly sure that a serious crime... Extra €500 for low earners' energy bills

People on low incomes could receive an extra €500 to cover their energy bills on top of the €800 already promised to offset the effect of high energy prices. Prime minister Mark Rutte during a debate in parliament on Tuesday on the spring budget statement (Voorjaarsnota), which is a prelude to the full budget in September. Rutte hopes that promising extra cash to help vulnerable families cope with high gas bills will make his budget more appealing to opposition parties... More >

Plan to give courts constitutional powers

Judges could be given the power to strike out laws that conflict with the constitution under plans being drawn up by the cabinet. Currently the courts are banned from ruling on whether laws passed by parliament are unconstitutional, but recent episodes such as the childcare benefits scandal have prompted ministers to consider giving citizens more legal protection. The Netherlands’ highest administrative court, the Council of State, apologised last November to victims of the childcare benefit scandal, some of whom were... More >

Police recruits leave over safety issues

One in four police recruits with a non-western background leaves the force within three years because they feel unsafe in the training environment, a report by researchers at Hogeschool Leiden has shown. Some 2,200 officers were interviewed to gauge the reasons why some of the officers quit so early in their career. The research, the first to be carried out into officers’ motivation to leave, has nothing to do with study results, the report, called ‘Daarom stappen ze op’ (‘That... More >
